Kitchen Trash Can: Good Reflexes
Sorting out your waste, in absolute terms, is not very complicated: glass, paper, and the rest, but in the often reduced space of our kitchens, it is a real headache!
Types of Garbage Cans
From the most beautiful to the most hidden
You can’t do without the trash can. The designers have looked at this object which was so badly suited to our kitchen, and now there are many designer trash cans on the market that we really want to show off. In general, they are round, and they are high, they are shiny (red or black), and, the height of merit, they are automatic! Indeed, a small detector makes them open to our approach, and that is so practical that we would throw anything for fun!
And even the closet bins have had the right to a makeover in recent years: they are round or square, attach to the closet door under the counter or sink if possible) and open when you pull on the door. Or they are built-in, mounted on rails: their bucket coming to present itself to us when we open the door.
Whether you choose it round or square, you have to think about the capacity of your trash can. Too much garbage will not be changed regularly enough, and bad odors may appear. Conversely, a bin considered too small will require a frequent change of bag or will quickly be “full to the brim,” its lid will always be dirty, and, there too, the odors will flow.
Its place in the kitchen is also important: it should not be too far from the worktop or the sink, where there is waste in short.
Waste, all in the Trash? Sort it out!
Sorting is essential and that’s great. We bring the glass to the container and we separate the paper and cardboard. It’s good, but we can do even better. Waste is at the source that we start to avoid by not buying over-packaged products. The cardboard boxes of our packaging, we flatten before throwing them away, so they take up less space in the bin which can hold more. Suppose you have a garden (balcony, green space) and compost everything that is biodegradable (peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, etc.) to make fertilizer. We don’t necessarily encourage city dwellers to adopt a hen, but after all, why not, as soon as we have a small garden square? More and more garbage cans are equipped with several bins to allow you to sort your waste.
Trash Can Maintenance, it’s Clean!
Do not wait until the bag is full of changing it; you will gain comfort (to close it), smell (the waste will not have had time to macerate), and cleanliness (the lid of your trash can was not in contact with the waste).
Once a week, clean your trash can. Do it with plenty of water, Marseille soap, or with a mixture of black soap and white vinegar. Above all, avoid bleach which is harmful and irritating; it can damage the skin and the respiratory system. Above all, avoid mixing it with any other product: this could create toxic gas fumes.
To prevent your garbage from being a source of foul odors, place a spoonful of baking soda or half a lemon in the bottom to absorb the scent. Very odorous waste (melon skins that you did not put in the compost, fish, and shrimp remains that your cat did not eat), do not throw them in the trash with the other waste without having previously wrapped them in a paper (or plastic) bag.
